Market News
Looks like the weather finally took a look at the calender and decided to give us something more fitting to the season. We’ve had several freezes now, and that will put an end to all of the summer produce that was still making a decent go of things outdoors. Several of our growers do have high tunnels that they’ll be growing in all winter, and between passive solar heating and the occasional application of direct heat, you may see some goodies like beans and tomatoes right on through to spring.
I expect ALG to remain open the weeks of both Christmas and New Year’s. Some of our growers might take time off, but we’ll be here to serve those with items to sell and you who wish to buy them.
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!
Other Area Farmers Markets
Most other area markets are starting to close down for the season or move to winter hours. The Athens Farmers Market is still open on Saturdays at Bishop Park. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is up and running, Saturdays from 9am to 1pm, and you can find out more here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on winter hours now on Saturdays from 1-4pm. Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from noon to 4pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.
All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Middle Tennessee Locally Grown: Time to Order Fresh Local Farm Products!
Manchester Locally Grown market
We always have a few new farmers, waiting their turn to join our market and offer their wonderful products to all our customers. In order to add more farmers, we feel it would be best to grow our customer base a bit. We want to be able to offer you and your friends some new local farm products.
The farmers and market managers would really appreciate your efforts to help spread the word about our fantastic market. What a great local resource for fresh, local farm products. Please pick up a few business cards to hand out to your friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Advertising is very expensive, and we want to use our slim market funds in a responsible manner.

Farm News of the Week
Catherine from Flying S Farms writes:
The cold temperatures have taken their toll on our produce. Watch for more greens in the spring. We still have winter squash available. Warm up with our dried Thai peppers and frozen pepper purée, perfect when you want a touch of heat to any dish. We have restocked several of our jams, great for gifting with our breads. Our seasonal Christmas Jam is a treat, made with fresh strawberries and cranberries. Watch for more pepper jams/jelly overbite next week, they are wonderful over cream cheese or in a cheese ball.
(L to R) Top: Frozen Habanero Pepper Puree, Butternut Squash, Dried Thai Pepper Pods.
Middle: Banana Friendship Bread, Wild Blackberry Jelly, Christmas Jam.
Bottom: Red Velvet Cheesecake Brownies, White Chocolate Blueberry Friendship Bread, Green Flame Pepper Jelly.
Triple B Farms has a large stock of all their delicious coffee, great for Christmas gift giving, for treating visiting guests, and for daily use. Stock up now! Coffee for a cause, 10% of all profits from our coffee sales goes to A Soldiers Child foundation, which is a Tennessee charity to benefit the families of our fallen warriors. Not only are you getting the best coffee around, but you are giving to a cause right here at home.
(L to R): Ground, K-Cups, or Whole Bean Coffee in your choice of three blends.
Terra Hills products are off the market this week, as Terresa is on vacation. They will return after Christmas.
Don’t miss the great selection of seasonal offerings (desserts and other goodies) available from several of our farmers, including the following:
(L to R) Top: Pumpkin Spice Soy Candle from Full Circle Candles; Pumpkin Spice Granola from Solace Farm; Healthful Pumpkin Muffins from Hope for Health.
Middle: Pumpkin Pie from Kountry Vittles; Several Types of Pumpkins from Weaver Farms; Pumpkin Pie and several types of pumpkins from Erdmann Farm.
(Bottom) Pumpkin Roll from Kountry Vittles; Rag Quilt from Triple B Farms.
For this Christmas season, Manchester Locally Grown managers are offering Gift Certificates in $5 increments. Introduce your loved ones to our fantastic, fresh, local market with these great gifts! We also have some combination gift baskets, each containing items from several farmers.
From Sow’s Ear Piggery:
This week, we are adding a couple of new items: Pork Roast Steaks and Jowls. Brown then braise the steaks in the oven or on the stovetop until tender for a warm meal on a chilly winter’s day. Jowls can be treated like pork sides/belly. Our jowls are fresh, uncured, so could be cured and smoked for bacon or used fresh in a braised dish. Or for the very ambitious, jowls are the exact cut called for in the charcuterie specialty Gunaciale. All excellent uses of this coveted cut. And of course, we have our usual items such as ground pork, breakfast sausage, and stew meat. All of our meat is USDA inspected from non-GMO, non-soy/corn, non-antibiotic free-range pigs.
(Clockwise from upper left) Hog Jowl, Pork Roast Steak, Ground Pork, Cubed Stew Meat.
From Linda at Dogwood Valley Greenhouse:
Dogwood Valley Greenhouse still has several Christmas cacti which would make beautiful hostess gifts, or would go a long way to brighten up your own home. The red ones are out of bloom, and we have sold out of the white and light pink ones, but we have several bright pink ones, covered with blooms and buds.
We also have enough greens to make a couple more kissing balls and wreaths, if you missed ordering the last couple of weeks. Also, look for other types of houseplants coming onto the market after Christmas.
(L to R) Bright Pink Christmas Cactus, Christmas Wreath, Christmas Kissing Ball.
PLEASE NOTE
Since the market managers will be on vacation next week, there will be no market pickup on December 28. You may want to stock up on some items for the next two weeks. The market will re-open for ordering on the morning of December 31, for pickup on Thursday January 3. Have a blessed Christmas and a wonderful New Year!
