Market News
Market weather and harvest are continuing to be wonderful!
Time to stock up on local foods from growers/makers you trust!
What I love about eating seasonally and locally is that variety is never an issue. Seasonal, fresh vegetables along with locally made krauts, tempeh, meats, eggs and seasonings, grains and some treats make for a wonderfully healthy diet. Plus, it *kind of * satisfies the hunter/gatherer in us all! A grocery store doesn’t provide near the fun or deliciousness!
Double Star Bar Farms has the BEST bagels around and customers agree that they smell and taste delicious! They also have candied ginger and fresh ginger! Grab yours while you still can! Once it’s gone for the season, it’s gone!
This week Farrar Beef has listed holiday pre-order items: whole beef tenderloins, standing rib roasts and more!
Botanical Harmony Farm has added more duck eggs and they are on sale this week for $6.50 per dozen! We are gathering so many each day and these are delicious hard-boiled, used in baking and so much more! One customer states that they are easier for her to digest than chicken eggs. Studies show that the pH of a duck egg is better suited for most human bodies! Give them a try while they are so abundant!
Don’t forget the wonderful milk and butter we have listed from the Amish Mennonites…. Michael Raines of Frontier Family Farm brings his orders plus gathers those of all the Mennonites who are local to him to bring us wonderful and rich full-cream milk, butter and the delicious fingerling potatoes from Nature’s Wealth
Smirk is back this week.
Be sure to check out the on-the-go items we have from The Krafty Kupboard , Flying S Farms Ann E Mays’ Gluten Free Goodies.
Thank you so much for supporting local! We love our community and market family!
See ya on the porch!!

The farmers and market managers would really appreciate your efforts to help spread the word about our fantastic market. What a great local resource for fresh, local farm products. Please pick up a few business cards to hand out to your friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Advertising is very expensive, and we want to use our slim market funds in a responsible manner.
Good morning!
Did you know that by ordering on the locallygrown market, you are virtually assured of receiving the “cream of the crop” from each farmer? You will receive the best products picked and made with pride especially for YOU! You can’t get any fresher and higher quality than that! Thank you for supporting your local farmers and small businessmen and women.
The market is open as usual, and will remain open for your orders till Tuesday at 10 pm.
Please be sure to read the section of the page entitled “Important Ordering and Pickup Information.”
Farm News of the Week
Don’t forget
… to let us know if you have suggestions for new products which could be offered by the market. We have a good variety of farms, many of which can alter their plans slightly upon request.
Nicole Sanborn from Smirk Ice Cream in Hendersonville has listed her delicious fruit-sweetened almond milk ice cream this week.
Some of the Smirk flavors: “Gooey Louie’s Chocolate Phooey”; “Jimmy Loveit’s Blackberry Buckets.”
Looking ahead!
John Erdmann from Erdmann Farm writes:
In anticipation of cooler weather, I have planted some radishes and onions. Radishes should be ready in the next couple of weeks. Earlier in summer, I planted two small pumpkin patches. With all the rain we are receiving, the pumpkins are growing nicely. I expect to have pie pumpkins available mid October. I will be travelling some, so will be missing some weeks.
Sow’s Ear Piggery is on vacation this week. Our natural pork products will be back on the market next week. See you then!
Triple B Farms has added an adorable Rag Quilt – Baby Size to the market this week.
Catherine from Flying S Farms has added a few new items to the market. Among them:
(Clockwise from upper left) Pumpkin Raisin Iced Cookies; Top Crop Beans, Carnival Winter Squash, Jamaican Scotch Bonnet Pepper.

GREETINGS FROM ORLANDO
If you made an order last week you know that Viki and Kathy handled Market Pickup in my absence on Friday. THANK YOU to both you ladies! We are blessed indeed to have capable and sweet helpers who can handle the job when duty and new grandbabies call me elsewhere. I am relishing the time with Finnigan Maccuill, Soren Keats and their parents.
Any time you visit out of your area hopefully you pick up some culinary experience, information or knowledge you didn’t possess beforehand. Such has been the case here.
This was breakfast the first day. One of the servings has an over easy egg underneath the avocado, and the other does not. They were both DELICIOUS! I had never heard of Avocado Toast but a quick Pinterest search turned up many variations. This simple version is made with regular bread, mashed avocado with lemon juice, and topped with smoked salmon. The CONCEPT however, can be adapted to be gluten free, vegan, and/or both.
Another new experience for me was . . . don’t roll your eyes . . . kombucha. Seriously! I’ve made my own for years and had never experienced any store bought commercial brands. One of the things I took down on this trip was a mother scoby, a gallon of sweet tea and dispensor to help the kids set up their own continuous brew system. It seems that after developing a taste for it at my house they realized how much they were spending . . . you know the rest.
So it was with a bit of hesitation I opened a dark brown bottle of coconut lime kombucha with a cute label, listened to the gas escaped and took a sip. . . . it wasn’t bad! The blueberry mint that my daughter shared wasn’t bad either . . . but to be honest, I like mine better. Neither were as tart or as sweet as I make it (using stevia) and I’ve got to figure out whether the flavors were naturally or artifically added.
All that being said, don’t be surprised if you see some new flavors added to our market page and we promise, ours will always be made with real ingredients!
FALL FARMER’S MARKET
Almost here! We’ve been annouching the Fall Food Festival and Farmer’s Market for a few weeks now and it starts NEXT SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30.
The Farmer’s Market part of this event will be super fun, BUT, it won’t be your typical Farmer’s Market! As a SUSTAINABLE Market our produce is not grown with GMO’s, chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. We are excited to share the healthiest locally grown food in the area with Dothan and the Wiregrass.
Greg Lolley (Mayim Farms) and Susan Avello (Lean Bean Chef) will get us off to a good start next on Saturday Sept. 30. Katherine Johnson, Birdie Martin, Melody Forsythe-Jetsche and Ros Horton will conduct classes in the following weeks as shown below. We’re excited to serve the Wiregrass with this information and hope you’ll take advantage of this unique opportunity. Please share with anyone you think may be interested.
THIS WEEK’S GROWER NOTES
We have the best Growers in the Wiregrass! Please learn more about them on our Grower Page.
AVALON FARMS: Thank God it’s finally Fall! Too bad no one told the weather. I felt like a complete idiot planting broccoli and cabbage transplants almost a month ago in 90 plus degree weather. Now they are a foot tall and going strong. Trying some new things like beets, watermelon radishes, brussel sprouts and Portuguese kale. It should be interesting. Also have some fall sugar snap peas started just for all you lovely people that loved them so much in the spring.
BAIN HOME GARDENS: Hello market friends! As of Friday it is officially fall. So exciting! I know it’s hard to believe but it is true. Fall is our second favorite time of the year here at Bain Home Gardens. It has a close second to spring. What we love about fall is the watching the leaves change & feeling the cool breeze in the air, a stark contrast to the summer! Where we live, we often are privileged to observe mass exoduses of birds heading further south for the winter. This year the Hummingbirds paid a visit.
This fall holds even more wonder and excitement for us. Fall is the perfect time to refresh or even start a garden for the first time. This is true for several reasons:
1. Cool weather means less weeding.
2. Cool weather crops tend to be less labor intensive.
3. Cooler temperatures mean you will water a little less and save money on your water bill!
So if you have had it in the wheelhouse of your mind to start a small garden, NOW IS THE TIME! Here at Bain Home Gardens we think everyone should experience the joy of picking food from your own yard or pot at least once. So over the next few weeks we will be doing some myth busters in regards to small home gardens. Look out for our “Myth Buster Series” starting next week! We will share our experiences with you from our massive fails to our surprising successes! It is our sincere desire to help you also grow sustainable produce for your families. Just think, if we all did a little how much this market would blossom & how that would help our community!
Thanks to all who supported our fledgling business this week. You give us hope that this thing is really possible. Till next week, we will be in the garden working on next week’s haul…from our family to yours.
HAWKINS HOMESTEAD FARM: We are very excited to add 2 new baby chicks to our flock! One of our broody mamas abandoned her eggs but our 7 month old girl hung in there and was rewarded for her hard work. They came at exactly 21 days on September 16th.
With the upcoming Market day, we are excited to meet everyone in person. We plan to have our fresh organic chicken and eggs on hand with a few surprises. We hope all of you will come out and take advantage of buying direct which means NO SALES TAX on items produced from the farm.
We hope to see you there!

Thank you for choosing Northeast Georgia Locally Grown as a way to support your local producers. This online farmers market allows you to buy directly from multiple farms committed to chemical-free and local produce all year long! CHEMICAL-FREE means produce and pastures grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides. LOCAL means within 80 miles from the market pickup locations (usually much much closer). Do you know someone who grows chemical-free food in the area? Get them in touch with us. Know someone who wants fresh food? Spread the word. Put the two together, and that’s growing organically!
