Market News

The everyone else here, our growers really took a beating when Irma blew through. Some were out of power for most of the week, but I think everyone has been restored by now. Plants were blown over and broken, fruit were knocked off the branches, and everything just generally took a beating.

The availability list does perhaps look just a bit light for this time of year, but they’ve really hustled to get what they can harvest onto the website for you. We’ve all really pulled together as a community this week, and there are some folks that had it much rougher than others. I hope that sense of camaraderie can stick with us for a good long time.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is up and running, Saturdays from 9am to 1pm, and you can find out more here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Oconee County Farms Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on Saturdays from 9-12. Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from noon to 4pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

Greener Acres Farm:  Fall is Coming

Fall is Coming

The seasons are changing. This weekend was the last weekend of summer and fall is here. Some of our summer produce s slowing down or stopping, other crops are now at their prime.

Back at the market this week, from Weyant Vegetable Farm, we have sweet corn again, and they have also added large and jumbo jack-o-lantern pumpkins. Great for decorating, but also great for making pies, muffins, cookies, etc.

Although Green"er" Acres Farm’s tomatoes are about done for the season, they have added grapes and Kiefer pears. These pears are an old heritage breed, bred for storage. They are hard and a bit gritty, but make excellent pear butter and can up wonderfully.

We still also have other amazing products such as, microgreens, eggs, dairy, baked goods, meats and produce.

Middle Tennessee Locally Grown:  Extra! Extra! From Sow's Ear Piggery

Manchester Locally Grown market

Our farmers and market managers would really appreciate your efforts to help spread the word about our fantastic market. What a great local resource for fresh, local farm products. Please pick up a few business cards to hand out to your friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Advertising is very expensive, and we want to use limited market funds in a responsible manner.

Good afternoon!

Andra from Sow’s Ear Piggery sends the following note:

Sow’s Ear Piggery wants to give a heads up to customers: if you anticipate wanting pork products in the next 2 weeks, please place your order this week to cover our absence the following week. Products come frozen for use at your convenience. As always, our pork is non-GMO, non-antibiotic, non-soy. We will be back on the market in October.

The market is open as usual, and will remain open for your orders till Tuesday at 10 pm. If you have already placed your order, you may place a second one to add pork products to your order (or for any other reason). The software will do all the paperwork for us.

(Clockwise from upper left) Breakfast Sausage, Tenderized Cutlet, Thick Cut Pork Chops, Kabob/Stew Cubed Shoulder.

See you on Thursday!

Blessings,
Linda & Michael

Broccoli is great raw, roasted, steamed, in soups or casseroles- really delicious and versatile! So stock up this week and get creative with your cooking!

We are also happy to have a big offering of oyster mushrooms from our long-time Amish farmer, Abraham Hershberger. His family has been working on their mushroom production for a few years now and have a beautiful crop in this week!
