Market News
It’s been a slow news week here, so I don’t have much to share with you. The weather is turning just right for all the spring veggies out in the fields, with a nice mix of sun, clouds, and rain. Today in particular was exactly what they love, and it looks like this next week will be more of the same. Don’t let the 80 degree days fool you, though. We’re bound to get more cold night, and more freezes before spring is here for good.
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!
Other Area Farmers Markets
Most other area markets are closed down for the season or have moved to winter hours. The Athens Farmers Market has closed for the season. They’ll return in April, and you can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market is closed for the season, and you can watch for their return on their website here: http://www.athenslandtrust.org/west-broad-farmers-market/. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running on winter hours now on Saturdays from 1-4pm. Folks to the east can check out the Hartwell Farmers Market, which starts bright and early on Saturday morning from 7am to noon, and Tuesday afternoons from noon to 4pm. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.
All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!
We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Dawson Local Harvest: New Additions to This Week's Dawson harvest
Dawson Local Harvest for February 23rd
New Additions to This Week’s Dawson Harvest
HI EVERYONE
Here’s a quick Update on what’s New this week. MY DAILY BREAD has added Blushing Peach Jam to their line of Jellies and Jams. This is a tasty blend of peaches and strawberries that’s quite nice on toast or with peanut butter. Meanwhile, LEILANI’S has added a new Vegetable to their cool-weather Produce line, the Purple-topped Root Turnip, a beautiful cooking Turnip with (what else?) a lavender-purple top half. It’s extremely nutritious, can be boiled. steamed, baked, and sliced for soups and salads. Next up, Leeks with their garlic-oniony flavor they’re fabulous for soups and stir-frys. Also back is the unusual purple-sheaf Green Onions, like a green onion with great color.
There’s really a lot available in the listings for This Week’s Market. If you take a good look around at some of the more unusual offerings you can find some wonderful gems. Take a chance and try something new!
THE MARKET IS NOW OPEN!
REMEMBER! You can now order until Tuesday night at 9 pm. Pick up your order at Leilani’s Gardens Friday afternoons from 4 to 6 pm.

Market News
Hello!
We are so excited to see you this week and get you your fresh vegetables and other great local food items!
This time of year we know you understand variety is at it’s lowest. BUT we have a great quantity of these selected items, so you can really order away and stock up on so much green goodness!
Our vegetables are picked to order and super fresh, so of course they last a long while in the fridge. You should find you can order enough to get you almost through the two weeks until the next pick up.
There is a great selection of meats avaialable from Bear Creek and Wedge Oak Farm, as well as eggs and our favorite cheese source, The Bloomy Rind. Dozen Bakery bread freezes quite well if you want an extra loaf.
Our next delivery date after this Wednesday will be Wednesday, February 21st
We are really excited for the year ahead, and hope to continue to serve you in the best way possible! We are always open to feedback and questions. It helps us to be better at what we do, so we appreciate you letting us know what you love or what some concerns may be!
Thanks for all your support – we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!
John and Tally
Recipes
*Acorn Squash and Spinach Salad *
2 medium acorn squashes
5 tablespoons olive oil, divided
1/2 teaspoon Chipotle Chile Pepper
2 handfuls baby spinach
1/4 cup crumbled blue cheese
1/4 cup chopped pecans
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1 teaspoon honey
salt and black pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
Cut the unpeeled squash in half from top to bottom. Turn the squash on its flat side and cut 1/2-inch slices and place them on a baking sheet. Using a spoon, remove any of the seeds from the cut squash.
Drizzle the sections with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and dust with the Chipotle Chile Pepper. Season with salt and pepper and transfer to the oven and roast the squash for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, check to see if the squash of tender, if not, roast for another 5-10 minutes until tender and then remove.
In a large salad bowl, toss together the spinach, blue cheese, pecans and roasted squash.
Whisk together the remaining olive oil, balsamic vinegar and honey. Season the dressing with salt and pepper and then drizzle over the salad. Toss to combine and serve immediately..
