Middle Tennessee Locally Grown:  Time to Order Fresh Local Farm Products!

Manchester Locally Grown market

The farmers and market managers would really appreciate your efforts to help spread the word about our fantastic market. What a great local resource for fresh, local farm products. Please pick up a few business cards to hand out to your friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Advertising is very expensive, and we want to use our slim market funds in a responsible manner.

Good morning!

Did you know that by ordering on the locallygrown market, you are virtually assured of receiving the “cream of the crop” from each farmer? You will receive the best products picked and made with pride especially for YOU! You can’t get any fresher and higher quality than that! Thank you for supporting your local farmers and small businessmen and women.

The market is open as usual, and will remain open for your orders till Tuesday at 10 pm.

Please be sure to read the section of the page entitled “Important Ordering and Pickup Information.”

Farm News of the Week

Erdmann Farm is on vacation mode for a couple of weeks. When I get back, I should have radishes and pumpkins in addition to the peppers I’ve had.

… to let us know if you have suggestions for new products which could be offered by the market. We have a good variety of farms, many of which can alter their plans slightly upon request.

Smirk Ice Cream will be available on the market this week. Treat yourself!

Natural & Old-Fashioned Operation at Casey Family Farm
Here at the Casey Family Farm we’re checking into certifying our cows as A2 cows. Our cows are all Guernsey and Jersey, with the Guernsey genes comprising about 75% of our herd. Approximately 90% of all Guernsey cows are A2 animals. We plan to test and certify our animals in the near future to verify that our milk is indeed A2 milk! A2 milk is a genetically superior milk which has been naturally preserved in select cows which did not go through a genetic mutation which occurred in cows many, many years ago. Most milk sold today( well over 90%) comes from Holstein cows which have the mutation or A1 milk. For more information on A2 milk, you can go to https://a2milk.com/faq/

We do feed grain to our milk cows in the milking parlor. However, our herd has year round access to hay and pasture ( when available), so we can honestly say that our herd derives a majority of its nutrition from grass. We try very hard here at the Casey Family Farm to keep our farming operation as “natural and old-fashioned” as possible. We like to say that our motto is" where old-fashioned milk is still in fashion!"

This message is from Linda Reed:
Dogwood Valley Greenhouse is running a special for the next two weeks: BOGO on Hardy Species Begonia. I have added this special to the market as a separate item under live plants.

I would also like to open pre-orders on Christmas decorations.
Kissing Balls on hangers – about 13-15" diameter – retail $35, pre-sale 10% discount = $31.50
Christmas Basket Centerpiece – about 10" in diameter – retail $20, pre-sale 10% discount = $18
Wreaths – on 16" base, measuring around 22-24" diameter – retail $27, pre-sale 10% discount = $24

These Christmas decorations are all handmade by me, from all natural materials gathered from my property or the local Christmas tree farm, except for the bright red berries and ribbons. All will be in limited quantities, but pre-sale orders will be guaranteed.

From Andra Martens:
This week, Sow’s Ear Piggery offers two different Pork Sampler Packages: “A” Package features a small rib rack, and “B” package features a tenderloin. Each package also includes one pound of breakfast sausage and one pound of ground pork. Regular products – cutlets (for chicken fried pork steak); stew meat (great for cooler fall nights); and thick cut pork chops – are available as usual. As always, our pork is non-GMO/antibiotics/animal-by-product/soy/corn raised.

(Clockwise from upper left): “A” Package Pork Sampler, “B” Package Pork Sampler, Thick-cut Pork Chops, Tenderized Cutlets.

All Cow Milk and Egg Orders from Cedar Rock MUST be in by 8:00pm SUNDAY!!

If you miss this deadline, you miss your milk next week. It is way to cumbersome to keep track of late orders and neither Sam or I have the time to do it. In the past, I had once said it was alright to text Sam, but that created an ‘administrative nightmare’ for me! I work a full time job in addition to the Market. Please get your orders in on time! Thank you for your cooperation!

Champaign, OH:  Learning To Fly

Well, some say life will beat you down
Break your heart, steal your crown
So I’ve started out for God-knows-where
I guess I’ll know when I get there
I’m learning to fly, around the clouds
But what goes up, must come down
I’m learning to fly, but I ain’t got wings…
Coming down is the hardest thing…
(Tom Petty-Learning To Fly)

Good evening, little local market of love customers…and, more importantly, much love to you!!

Well, it’s been a week. You know it, I know it. As weeks go, it’s been a crushing, sad string of events.

Your market manager was a bit scarce, a bit shy of a lot of posting, a whole lot of upset.

The past week found myself, along with much of my high school class, and classes behind and before me, saying goodbye to one of ours. Gone too soon, once again, the sadness of another one losing a courageous battle. Jenny, our vibrant, blonde, beauty, who still possessed all the love and energy as she did in high school, fought the good fight. She was such an example of learning to fly. She finally got her wings, taking her out of her pain, late last week. Her funeral was Monday. Yeah, that fateful day.

In one day, crushing waves continued to hit. First, a farewell to a friend. But, before that, we woke up to the Las Vegan horrifying news. We ended the day, bidding Tom Petty farewell.

Too much. Too much. Too much.

And, Tom…well, you know my love of music, musicians, bands, songs…and, I take the passing of each musician so hard. But, Tom…well, he was different. Tom was, to me, the everybody musician. A good guy, playing the kind of music that was there for you, each step of the way.

I was lucky to see him perform, on several occasions. I just sat, and cried. I cried for the lives lost, the injured ones in Las Vegas. I cried at Tom’s passing. I cried at Jenny’s passing. So much good, gone in a blink.

Learning to Fly…after my sadness, after trying to come to terms with it all, I kept singing this song, over and over. Playing it over and over. Because, in my life, learning to fly, was the way I lived. Growing up, all I could think about was flying. Flying to the moon, flying to anywhere, flying out of the West End, flying off to find myself.

Later, when I took off after college, moved across the United States, having my daughter, starting my own businesses…life…all life…it’s about learning to fly. I was never afraid of flying. I figured I would either land on my ass, or I would sail to success.

And, then, watching Jenny leave us, watching her try to fly, only to fly off for eternity, and then the other events of Monday, reminded me that learning to fly happens, everyday, in every way. Learning to fly also gives me hope, gives me inspiration, makes me realize that I have a role, in all of this. A role that is to be the best human I can be. I can shelter with love, I can hug and hold whoever needs it, I can carry out the positive, loving vibe that was started before me…

I’m learning to fly…it’s my thought for tonight. An odd weblog, you may think, for opening the market for the week, but not really.

We all have a part. We all can fly. We all can help, love, nurture, lead, protect…and, if my message has never resonated before, I hope that it does now…what the world needs now, is love sweet love…we are all learning to fly…

XOXO,
Cosmic Pam
